What is keloid removal?

A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that extends beyond the edges of the original injury. Keloids are often firm, shiny and raised, and can be itchy or tender. They are more common on the earlobes, chest, shoulders, upper back and jawline, and some people are genetically more prone to them. Unlike ordinary raised scars, keloids tend not to fade on their own.

The most common first-line treatment is injecting a corticosteroid directly into the keloid, which reduces inflammation and collagen overgrowth so the scar gradually flattens and softens. Laser can help reduce redness and improve texture. Simply cutting a keloid out on its own carries a high chance of it returning, so treatment usually focuses on these combined, non-surgical methods. Steroid injections are usually postponed during pregnancy and may not suit people with an infection in the area or certain medical conditions. How much does keloid treatment cost at Egg Clinic?

On our published price list, a scar laser or keloid injection for one facial spot smaller than 0.5cm is ₩30,000 per session. Larger spots, body keloids and combination plans are priced after the doctor has examined the scar, because the amount of medication and number of sessions vary. How the treatment works

1. Consultation

   The doctor examines the scar, asks how and when it formed and confirms it is a keloid before planning treatment.

2. Preparation

   The area is cleansed; numbing cream can be applied for sensitive areas.

3. Treatment

   A steroid is injected directly into the keloid with a fine needle, and laser may be added to reduce redness or improve texture.

4. Aftercare

   Mild tenderness can last a day or two. Avoid friction and new piercings or injuries to the area, and return for follow-up sessions as advised.

Tips for international patients

• Keloids usually need several sessions a few weeks apart, so ask whether your stay allows a full course or a first session with follow-up at home.
• Bring photos showing how the scar has changed over time.
• Avoid new piercings or tattoos near the area while it is being treated.
